Typical Evening

With the exception of Session 1 – Leadership, Session 6 – Executive Project, and Session 7 – International Trip, Eller Evening MBA classes meet every Thursday for 18 months.

Join us for a "typical evening:"

Thursday
3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Participants arrive at the the Eller College of Management's Scottsdale Campus at McDowell Mountain Business Park. Several students grab something cool to drink and sit down to chat for a few minutes before class. A hot topic is that particularly challenging accounting problem set assigned by Professor Jeff Shatzberg.

4:00 p.m – 6:45 p.m.

Class starts promptly. Professor Schatzberg places the solutions on the overhead projection and a lively discussion ensues. The discussion as well as the solutions are captured on video and will be downloaded to D2L (Desire 2 Learn) at the end of the evening. You’ll go back tomorrow to review problem number 3, to make sure you "got it." Now it is time to move onto the next hot accounting topic. It is hard to believe how much you’ve already learned but Professor Schatzberg manages to make class entertaining and the time seems to fly.

6:45 p.m – 7:15 p.m.

Dinner time — the smell of delicious Italian food has been permeating the classroom for the last 15 minutes and now it is time to sit down with your classmates and catch up for the week. John is passing around a couple of photos of his new baby girl. Lori has Professor Schatzberg cornered, presenting her case for an alternative answer to problem number 3. Paige Bausman, the Evening MBA program manager, is discussing the itinerary for the international trip to Argentina and Chile with a group of students as they move through the buffet line. Several caterers are used throughout the program so students have a variety of dinner options.

7:15 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Professor Ordóñez finishes her dinner and is in the classroom by 7:15. You zip in and take your laptop off snooze. You are connected to the high-speed wireless network and see you have several emails from work that you read through quickly before class starts. The class is advancing through statistics at a good clip. However, Professor Ordóñez boils the concepts down and had posted additional material to D2L that you read earlier in the week so you are caught up . Her class is practical and you have become adept at using the statistical functions of Microsoft Excel 2007.

10:00 p.m. – 10:15 p.m.

Your team meets to discuss the accounting case study assignment and to select a time to work on it over the weekend. Your team chooses to meet at your favorite coffee shop, which is conveniently located for everyone.

The Weekend

You accessed D2L before you left work Friday and got the reading assignments that you’ll need to complete by next Thursday. You’ll put in a couple hours reading tonight and Saturday morning so you can take the kids on a hike Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning you’ll meet your team to discuss the case and put together the analysis to present during class. You’ll email the PowerPoint presentation to the team that night so other team members can fine tune what they plan to present. Monday night is football so nothing is going to happen then! Tuesday and Wednesday night you’ll finish the statistic problems and study for the accounting quiz.
